As Muslims, we have a responsibility along with everybody else on the planet, to be guardians of the welfare of the world in which we live.
As narrated in a hadith, Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported that the Prophet (peach be upon him) said; “The world is sweet and green, and verily Allah is going to install you as vicegerents in it in order to see how you act”. (Sahih Muslim) Sometimes like everybody else, we forget. Sometimes we remember and think ‘it’s too much trouble, someone else can do something,’ The BMSLG Environment Task Group is passionate about how we can work on and with projects across Bristol where, with a few minutes of our time, we can make a lasting effect. |

Whether it is raising our voices in the Environmental Agency which reports to our government, we make sure we are heard regarding pollution that affects our communities’ health or to the industrial land social housing is built on. In sum, this group uses opportunities to attempt to improve conditions. A few minutes on your day can give you and your family lasting benefits. Make sure you and your family go through or past a green space on the way home from school or shopping or work, allow that few minutes to improve your families emotional and mental well-being. |
Teach your children to put their litter in a bin, lead by example.
When you finish that bottle of coke or water, put that empty bottle back in your car, (less effort than throwing it away) and refill it to take with you to the mosque for salah or out with you when you need a drink. Support your mosque in Plastic Free Ramadan...they can’t succeed if you constantly throw that bottle away. When you put your recycling out for the bin men - Look at it! Then multiple it in your mind by 52. Overwhelming, isn’t it! Can you or your family reduce it slightly? It doesn’t take much thought. |
When your children come home with school projects about the environment, take time to listen.... understand what the school is attempting to do. Can you do anything in your own family which might help?
Each step we make is a step towards a healthier enjoyable future for our grandchildren and us. So, watch this space for new ideas on how to get involved, a few minutes is all it takes. |
